Karthik Subbaraj, who did back-to-back commercial films like Mahaan, Jigarthanda Double X and Retro, is now back with a rather small-scale rooted film, Dorothy. Headlined by Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth, the film opened in theatres after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, on Friday.
As the film released in theatres, director Karthik Subbaraj, for whom this is not only his milestone 10th film, but also his first with music by Ilaiyaraaja, penned a lengthy note. The filmmaker specifically requested audiences to avoid spoilers before watching the film.
He wrote, "To My Dear Audience, It's #DorothyDay and though it's my 10th film, am as excited and nervous as i was on the day of release of my first film Pizza. The days i have spent making this film have changed me as a person, as a filmmaker , as an artist , as a human. This film is the most close to reality film i have made and it's the most emotional story i have told so far. This Story is based on lot of real incidents from the 90s and when i felt the need to tell this story out in the Mainstream, there was just one question that was asked often to me by many...."
Reiterating the trust he has placed on the audience for the film, he continued, "On what belief you want to make this film? My Answer was and is ' My belief on the AUDIENCE .' And yeah the day has come where we, the team of #Dorothy is eagerly ready to show the film to the Audience, like how a kid shows its first painting to Parents... and yeah... D O R O T H Y is all yours now.... Give a little space to her and she will touch your hearts for sure..."
Then, on behalf of his team, he placed a request, writing, "Please do watch our film in Theatres and I promise it will be Worth it... I request you to avoid listening or reading any spoilers before watching the film. It will be an experience worth experiencing. Also Please do not give away any spoilers, post any clips of the film so that others also feel what you felt, in the same way...." (sic)
With editing by Ganesh Siva and camera work by Tirru, Dorothy also stars Ramachandran Durairaj, Gajaraj, Muthukumar, and Jeeva Subramanian, among others. Karthik Subbaraj is producing Dorothy under his Dhammam Films banner. Guneet Monga and Aachin Jain are also producing under the Sikhya Entertainment banner, with Jyoti Deshpande producing under the Jio Studios banner.
