Ponniyin Selvan promo: Historians and writers talk about the golden age of Cholas

Historians and writers talk about the rich history of the Cholan dynasty

Published: 16th July 2022

In a video released by Lyca Productions, to promote Ponniyin selvan-I,  historians and writers talk about the rich history of the Cholan dynasty. In the promotional video, we can see scholars on the topic like S.Ramachandran(historian), S.Ramakrishnan(writer), S.Jayakumar(Researcher on cultural history), and Bharathi Bhaskar(orator) talk about the irreplaceable mark left by the Cholas in the annals of history.

The historical significance of the thalassocratic empire is brought to life through multiple interesting facts. We are informed about Vijayalaya Chola naming Thanjavur as the capital in 848 A.D, the Cholas emerging as an empire during the time of Raja Raja Chola, and how the Cholas expanded their reign across the South-East Asian countries under Rajendra Chola.

The promo attempts to give us an idea about the massive scope of the story and the strong historical foundations upon which the plot of the film is built. Ponniyin selvan-I, an adaptation of the widely successful novel of the same name by Kalki, has been a dream project for many in the Tamil film industry. The adaptation failed to launch after being attempted by many big film personalities(including M.G.R), until celebrated director Mani Ratnam took charge of the project in 2020.

Ponniyin Selvan-I, set to release on 30 September 2022, includes a star-studded cast from across India. Writers, Historians, and experts on ancient Cholan history were brought on board to give us an authentic portrayal of the ancient Tamil kingdom in all its might and glory. Directed by Mani Ratnam, The film includes actors like Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Karthi, Sarathkumar, Vikram, and more playing Cholan royalty.
