Santhosh Narayanan: I composed, arranged, recorded.. Enjoy Enjaami

Hours after Arivu asserted that he had written, composed, sung and performed Tamil indie song Enjoy Enjaami, music composer Santhosh Narayayan who has been credited as the producer of the song, opened up about his contribution in the making of the song.

In a two-page note issued by the music composer, “In December 2020, Dhee came up with an idea of creating a Tamil song which glorified our roots and celebrated nature. I then composed, arranged, recorded, and co-sand “Enjoy Enjaami”. The above said work of mine is often referred to as “producer” globally as many already know in the independent space.” It is to be noted that in Arivu’s post, he had “written”, “composed”, “sung” and “performed” the song.

Stating that Dhee, Arivu and himself had “come together” with a “lot of love for each other and love for independent art”, the composer added that instead of it having any artist “just perform (sing)”, they agreed to either “co-compose the tunes” or write the lyrics.

“While Dhee and Arivu agreed to sing the song, both Dhee and Arivu were involved in the creative process. Dhee co-composed the times of many her lines, while Arivu agreed to write the lyrics. I composed the rest of the tune and also composed the tune of Arivu’s portions,” he wrote.

Santhosh also revealed that director Manikandan had helped Arivu in “creating a flow and script for the song lyrics” and inspire with “real life stories and cultural history”. He also asserted that just like his other songs like Rakita Rakita, Ennadi Mayavi, where he has a reference phrase, Santhosh said that Enjoy Enjaami was also one of them.

In his post Arivu had said that spent six months to work on the song, while Santhosh said that the entire process of ideation, composition, arrangement, and recording was done less than 30 hours. The composer also said that the revenues raised from the song were shared equally between Dhee, Arivu and himself.

Addressing the recent performance of Dhee’s Enjoy Enjaami at Chess Olympiad 2022, Santhosh said that Arivu was out of country due to his ongoing US schedule. He also went on to express his adoration to Arivu and how his most favourite song of Arivu’s is yet to- be released Keechey Keechey from upcoming Anal Mele Panithuli.

“I have always utilized my platform to be a voice for the oppressed and both my personal life and art is a testament to it. The work ethic, culture and camaraderie that we follow in and outside my home is an open secret. I only have love for art and all the amazing artists from our land and we will see an epic rise in many new Thamizh voices globally in the coming months!,” Santhosh wrote.

It is to be noted that Enjoy Enjaami which is considered a milestone single in the Tamil indie music space, is based on the story of Arivu's grandmother, Valliammal and the repercussions she faced due to caste oppression. While the remix version of the song by DJ Snake became the first-ever Independent Tamil song to get featured on Times Square Billboard.
