Pebbles produced by Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara did not make it to the first shortlist announced on December 21

Pebbles, the Tamil film directed by PS Vinothraj is India's official entry to the Oscars. The film, however, did not make it to the shortlist, which was announced on December 21. The film is produced by Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara. 

Vignesh took to Twitter to share the news. He also thanked everyone who rooted for the film. He said, "Would have been great to be on this list! Nevertheless, I thank PsVinothraj for giving such a pure cinema! I thank the Indian jury members for selecting our film as the official entry for the Oscars this year. Thanking all our well-wishers & friends for rooting for us."

The films submitted for the 94th Academy Awards had to be released theatrically in their respective countries. This should be done between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, and submitted to the Academy by November 1, 2021. 

The films that did make it to the list include Great Freedom from Austria, Playground from Belgium, Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom from Bhutan, Flee from Denmark, Compartment No. 6 from Finland, I'm Your Man from Germany, Lamb from Iceland, A Hero from Iran, The Hand of God from Italy, Drive My Car from Japan, Hive from Kosovo, Prayers for the Stolen from Mexico, The Worst Person in the World from Norway, Plaza Catedral from Panama and The Good Boss from Spain.

The final five nominees for the category will be announced on February 8, 2022.
