The sequels we deserve

With Naachiyaar's story lending itself to a sequel, we list some of our super hit films that deserve a sequel
The sequels we deserve

Last week's Naachiyaar had Jyotika's character, the cop, being transferred to a region where honour killings are rampant. That left us wondering about the film's sequel possibilities, and in extension, about super hit Tamil films over the years that could do with a follow-up. There are, of course, already planned sequels for films like Enthiran, Indian, Vishwaroopam, Saamy, Sathuranga Vettai, Sandakozhi, Maari and many more films, but here are many more films that deserve a sequel.

Nayagan

It should have been a happy ending as the court exonerates Velu Naicker due to lack of evidence. He sees his grandson for the first time and the kid's question, neenge nallavar-ah ille kettavar-ah, moves him to tears. But his happiness isn't long-lived, as he gets shot down by inspector Kelkar's mentally unstable son who learns that Velu Naicker had killed his father. The film ends with the young Sakthivel, named after his grandfather, kneeling down next to the latter's body. What if he carried the mantle a la Michael Corleone? What if he decided to strive for the welfare of the Tamils in Mumbai, after learning more about his grandfather?

Anbe Sivam

The blooming friendship of Nallasivam and Anbarasu comes to a screeching halt when Nalla gets to know that Aras is going to get married to Balasaraswathi, the girl he was in love with. The film ends with Nalla walking out from the wedding and also the lives of Anbu and Bala. What if Anbu were to learn about Nalla's relationship with his wife, or Bala realises that Nalla isn't dead? The possibilities are delicious.

Aaytha Ezhuthu

This political drama ends with Inba heading back to jail while Michael and co. head to the secretariat. How about a film set a few years later when Inba gets out and takes the position of Selvanayagam, while Michael is now in power. The face-off between an honest politician and a ruthless gangster would definitely be fascinating.

Anniyan

Ambi was deemed cured by doctors from his multiple personality disorder and hopes to lead a normal life with his wife Nandini. But seeing a drunk man (who was indirectly the reason for his sister's death, decades back) troubling the public in the train he travels, Ambi seems to suffer a relapse. What's worth remembering is that the doctor, while initially treating Ambi, had convinced him that he can get freed only if Anniyan doesn't come out. Ambi, now with the Anniyan character blended into his personality, can still carry on with his 'cleansing' of the society. How would he go about it?

Puthupettai

In a surprising turn of events at the end of the film, instead of being a victim of a police encounter, Kokki Kumar gets his record wiped and becomes an MLA. Ten years later, he also becomes the finance minister of the state, but still can't find the son he had left in a garbage bin years back. What if the grown-up son returns, somehow figures out that Kokki is his father, and decides to take revenge for discarding him?

Aayirathil Oruvan

Muthu, who was the 'chosen one' to save the Cholas, had to watch the horror of an entire dynasty perish in front of his eyes. But that doesn't stop him from saving the king's son and escaping from the clutches of the Pandya descendants. Will the prince reach his motherland Thanjavur, grow up and avenge the death of his entire clan as well? Will Selvaraghavan's planned sequel ever get made?

Mankatha

The climax revealed that the entire heist was planned by Vinayak and Prithvi who are now many millions richer. But according to records, Prithvi is an honest cop who succeeded in his mission while Vinayak died in the crossfire and Ganesh (who was killed by Vinayak) absconded to Thailand. After getting rid of Kamal Ekambaram, the only one who knows of his existence, Vinayak is completely off the radar. What can a man with millions and no identity do? Anything he pleases. And that means plenty of creative freedom for sequel.

Thupakki

Jagadish might've destroyed the terrorist group and deactivated the sleeper cells under its command. But what happens if a situation calls for him to go beyond the call of duty once again? A possible attack from another group could make way for another film about our one-man army.  Another story that unfolds during the hero's holiday?

Thegidi

After solving a huge criminal case and believing that he has brought to justice those who were involved in it, Vetri reunites with Madhu. But the final piece of the puzzle, Purushothaman Vallaba, is still at large and even has the audacity to call Vetri. But what does he reveal? Does Vetri have enough in his hands to track down the mastermind behind the insurance policy scam?

Theri

This Vijay starrer actually ends with a premise for a sequel. DCP Vijaykumar, who was under the alias of Joseph Kuruvilla in Kerala, now has a new identity -- Dharmeshwar in the Indo-China border of J and K. He gets a few photos and a pen drive in the mail, then he looks at his daughter and tells her that he'll be out of town for another assignment to which she cooly replies, "Theri baby". What will his next mission be? Will things get personal once again?
