Legendary art director Marutirao Kale has passed away. He was 92. As per reports, he was admitted to Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai after being diagnosed with COVID-19 in early May.

Marutirao Kale had designed sets for over 100 Hindi films. Some of his most iconic works were Purab Aur Paschim, Pakeezah, Deewaar, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Kabhi Kabhie and Disco Dancer.

Marutirao had started out as a set carpenter and worked on several films including K Asif's Mughal-e-Azam (1960). He was later hired by the London Film Production Ltd as an assistant art director, before venturing out as an independent art director.

In the 90s, Marutirao designed sets for the Amitabh Bachchan spectacle Ajooba, as well as the Dilip Kumar-Raaj Kumar starrer Saudagar. His last credited work on IMDb is the 1997 film Divine Lovers
