Actor Namit Das celebrates his birthday today. With the successes of Aarya, Mafia and A Suitable Boy, Namit now awaits the announcement of a string of exciting projects. On occasion of his birthday, here are interesting facts about him.

Namit is a theatre artist

Namit began his journey into acting through theatre. He was introduced to theatre in college and began frequenting the famous Prithvi Theatre, juggling his interest in acting with his lectures. Soon enough, he was offered a play and as he enacted his character before the audience, he knew he would act for a living.

Namit is part of a music band

Namit has partnered with multi-instrumentalist Anurag Shanker for interesting music collaborations. Their band’s music is a breath of fresh air. The band’s reimaginations fuse Indian tradition and a modern, contemporary vision. Das had always wanted to be a singer and composer and he got his wish through this partnership. Their band often uploads covers of songs that are part of the light classical style of music. The quarantine covers by the band have gained quite some popularity in recent times. The two most popular ones are Badan Pe Sitare Lapete Hue and Zaroorat Hain Zaroorat Hain.

He's the son of the veteran ghazal singer, Chandan Dass and his mother, Yamini Dass debuted with him in Sui Dhaga

Namit belongs to a family of musicians and singers and so has been musically inclined since his childhood. His father, Chandan Dass is a renowned ghazal singer, who was trained under the tutelage of Ustad Moosa Khan and Pandit Mani Prasad of Delhi. Namit’s mother Yamini Dass debuted in Sui Dhaaga and the mother and son got to share the screen for the first time. She also bagged a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in it.

Namit is a professional composer

The actor-singer has composed and sung a song for Mira Nair's directorial. Das's song is called The Boatman Song and it has been planted into the series at a pivotal stage when two of the lead characters begin to fall in love. What's special about this song is that it has penned by Namit's mother, Yamini Dass and it marks his first collaboration with her! Not to mention, the music album of A Suitable Boy has been curated by the world-renowned sitarist Anoushka Shankar, whose work has been an influence on Namit. He is one of the music composers of Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding Musical.

Namit Das married his long time girlfriend, Shruti Vyas; they met during their theatre days

Namit not only discovered his lifelong passion in theatre but also met the love of his life, Shruti Vyas. They dated for a long time (6 years) before tying the knot. Like any other relationship, theirs also had its share of ups and downs. After six years of courtship, they married in a traditional affair graced by their close friends and family. The couple has acted in Zoom Studios' short film Tape.
