Akshay Kumar's Sooryavanshi postponed due to COVID-19 resurge

After a one-year delay caused by the pandemic outbreak in March 2020, Rohit Shetty's Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, which was scheduled for release on April 30, has been postponed again on the back of the resurgence of COVID-19. The postponement has been attributed to the shutdown of theatres in Maharashtra as ordered by the government.

The news comes a day after the film's lead actor Akshay Kumar tested positive for COVID-19. A statement issued by the makers says, "Team Sooryavanshi postpones the release of the film. The Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr Uddhav Thackeray had a discussion with director Rohit Shetty yesterday. In the meeting, Mr Uddhav Thackeray appreciated Rohit Shetty as he took the brave and difficult decision of postponing Sooryavanshi owing to the current COVID situation in the state."

The film, which is being billed as a part of Rohit Shetty's Cop Universe, also has Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn reprising their characters from Simmba and Singham, respectively. The new release date of the film is yet to be announced.
