Netflix has apologised for using the word pariah in the synopsis of its newly released teenage dramedy Never Have I Ever, after a viewer pointed out that the term is widely used as a racial slur against Indians.
Citing the misconception in the synopsis the viewer wrote:
Though pariah means an outcast on a surface level it actually denotes a member of an oppressed South Indian community of ceremonial drummers (paraiyar).
Apologising for the mistake Netflix wrote:
The streaming giant also changed the description of the show shortly, as promised.
Directed by Mindy Kaling, Never Have I Ever stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan in the lead. The show has been recieving mixed reviews from the viewers and critics.
