AR Rahman criticises Masakali 2.0, urges fans to 'enjoy the original'

The composer isn’t happy with the remixed version of his hit track from Delhi 6

AR Rahman has criticised the new version of Masakali — titled Masakali 2.0 — which was released recently.

The remix, featuring Siddharth Malhotra and Tara Sutaria in the music video, was released by T-Series. The song has been retooled by Tanishk Bagchi, and sung by Tulsi Kumar and Sachet Tandon. Rahman is credited as the original composer on the track.

In a tweet, Rahman urged fans to ‘enjoy the original’ version that was sung by Mohit Chauhan in Delhi 6.

Rahman wrote, “No short cuts, properly commissioned, sleepless nights, writes and re-writes. Over 200 musicians, 365 days of creative brainstorming with the aim to produce music that can last generations. A team of a Director, a Composer and a Lyricist supported by actors, dance directors and a relentless film crew. Lots of love and prayers, A.R. Rahman.”

Masakali 2.0 features Sidharth and Tara sneaking into a glitzy hotel suite. The song features original lyrics by Prasoon Joshi, with additional lyrics by Tanishk.

Before Rahman, Prasoon had also expressed his disappointment with the new track. He had tweeted: “All songs written for Delhi 6, including Masakali are close to my heart. Sad to see when original creation of AR Rahman, Prasoon Joshi and singer Mohit Chauhan insensitively utilised. Up to the conscience of T-Series.”

Speaking about Masakali 2.0, Bhushan Kumar of T-Series had earlier stated, “We, at T-Series, have always believed in backing good music. AR Rahman had created a musical gem in Masakali which has been one of my biggest personal favourites over the years. The song from Delhi-6 had got a lot of love from the audience when it had released back then. Till date, the song is a rage among youngsters. When my team was discussing doing a recreated version of the song, I thought it would be a good idea to present the chartbuster track in a new fashion.”
