Rape-accused Karan Oberoi granted bail by Bombay High Court

The Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail to actor-singer Karan Oberoi who was arrested last month on charges of rape and extortion. On May 4, an FIR was lodged against Karan for allegedly molesting and filming a woman on the pretext of marriage. In her report, the 34-year-old complainant had accused Karan of blackmailing her by threatening to leak their video online.

Setting bail at Rs. 50, 000, the apex court said the police had found the FIR against Karan to be false. The court observed that there was no evidence of extortion in the Whatsapp messages exchanged between the two. It further noted that the woman staged a recent attack on herself and filed a second FIR in a seeming attempt to deny him bail. The court instructed Karan’s lawyers to present all proof of his innocence by June 20 and directed the police to take appropriate action against the complainant.

Karan Oberoi has appeared in the television shows Swabhimaan and Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. He was last seen in the Amazon Prime Video series Inside Edge
