Meet the Rebels: Sonchiriya Trailer 2 breakdown
Emergency booms over the airwaves, the police are closing in: will the dacoits surrender?
The second trailer of Abhishek Chaubey’s dacoit drama, Sonchiriya, was released on Friday. The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpayee, Ranvir Shorey, Bhumi Pednekar and Ashutosh Rana. While the first trailer had introduced us to the gritty landscape and tense political climate — Chambal of the ‘70s, Emergency-era — the second one offers a closer glimpse at the characters of the film.
The trailer opens with a display of wedding preparations in a rural household; we see a boy prancing down the courtyard with a colourful air-spinner in his hand, one that bears a sticker of Indira Gandhi. Rifles go off in the air, and the camera pans down to reveal ‘Man Singh’ (Manoj Bajpayee) and his gang of bandits. It's made clear they have come to loot the bridal jewellery, though there's more to the man named Man Singh. Turning to his main henchman, 'Vakila' (Ranvir Shorey), Singh says, “Hand over the bride her wedding gift. 101 rupees.”
Parallely, we meet greenhorn rebel 'Lakhna' (Sushant Singh Rajput), a young outlaw shooting down ducking enemies with his rifle and taking insult when quizzed on the loyalties of his gun. Another title card announces Bhumi Pednekar as ‘Indumati’ — the desi damsel who might turn the plot around — and yet another highlights Ashutosh Rana as 'Gujjar', the aggressive police officer with a personal axe to grind.
As the sun beats down hard on Central India, and motives and ethics collide in the slippery ravines of Chambal — which of them would live, and which ones die, in Abhishek Chaubey’s ‘story of rebels, written in dust’?
Produced by RSVP, Sonchiriya is scheduled to release on March 1. The music is composed by Vishal Bhardwaj and the lyrics are written by Varun Grover. Chaubey’s last directorial venture was Udta Punjab, released in 2016.
