Joy Thakkolkaran is back. The young entrepreneur in Ranjith Sankar’s Punyalan Agarbattis, played by Jayasurya, will make a comeback this year. The director has announced a sequel to the hit movie, the shoot of which will begin soon. "Yes, I am directing a sequel to Punyalan Agarbattis. This is one of my favourite projects and I'd been planning it for sometime, but things fell into place only now," he says. The movie is yet to be titled. Ranjith says he has been pondering over the idea of making a sequel to the hit movie since 2013, when the first part came out. But, the lack of a hard-hitting story stopped him from doing so. "I must have thought about over 10,000 stories for the sequel. Political satire needs to have a strong subject. Then, too, the common trend where sequels rarely turn out better than first part was a hindrance. But, when I landed on this story, I realised it was time to announce the project," he says.

Ranjith has scripted the movie himself. According to him, one reason Punyalan Agarbattis is close to his heart is its Thrissur connect. "Though I live in Kochi now, Thrissur has a special place in my heart. And, Punyalan Agarbattis is a story that can be placed only in Thrissur. So, I have a strong nostalgic connect to the movie," he adds.

The sequel will have all the same characters and will be a continuation of the first part. "The movie will start from where Punyalan Agarbattis ended. The cast, including Nyla Usha and Aju Varghese, will reprise their characters in the sequel, too. I cannot think of a sequel without any one of the characters," he adds.

The new project, which will be produced by Jayasurya and Ranjith under the banner of Dreams N Beyond, is likely to hit the screens this December. Ranjith’s last movie Ramante Eden Thottam is running successfully in theatres.
