My film is not the same as Akshay's Padman

...says director Abhishek Saxena on Phullu

Published: 07th June 2017

The story of Phullu, which is about making affordable sanitary napkins for the poor, has drawn comparisons with Akshay Kumar's next, Padman. But director Abhishek Saxena assures that his film, save for the sanitary pads subject, is completely different.

Saxena says, "As far as I know, the story of Padman is about how a man made cheap sanitary napkins that benefitted many women. On the other hand, our story aims to create awareness about hygiene and the use of sanitary napkins in rural areas where people don't even know their existence of pads. So, Phullu is different from Padman."

Akshay's Padman has been confirmed to be based on a story titled, The Sanitary Man. It's the real life success story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who made India's cheapest sanitary napkin machine. The story was penned by Twinkle Khanna, who is now producing Padman

According to Saxena, his Phullu, however, is a fictional story, though "real life situations have given inspiration. In the film, we have even shot portions where doctors explain why a sanitary napkin is better than cloth," he adds.

Phullu is set for release next week.
