'People don't know my pain, my story'
Suja Varunee, one of the contestants of Bigg Boss Tamil, talks to us about the show
Suja Varunee may not have spent 100 days on Bigg Boss Tamil, but that didn't stop her from getting attached to the house. She still misses waking up to kuththu songs, for one. "Honestly, I hadn't even dreamt of interacting with Kamal Haasan sir. Bigg Boss gave me that platform. He was like a guiding light for all of us," she says.
Did the eviction come as a shock?
Yes, and only when I came out of the house, did I learn that they hadn't shown the real me. The channel projects contestants to suit its narrative. I performed all the tasks with utmost sincerity, but I was criticised for being fake and aggressive. When Snehan was given the choice of saving me or Ganesh, I knew I was a goner. I cared for everybody there and lived there like I do in my house.
Were you disappointed with the reactions?
I wanted to explore a different side of myself, hence accepted the offer. I am not disappointed, but hurt because people didn't understand me. They thought I was being overly emotional. I am a strong person. I have seen horrible things in life. Other contestants say that the house changed them. But that never happened with me.
Why do you suppose you didn't win?
Maybe, if I had pretended like the others, I would have won the game? I don't know. (Smiles) But I joined the show only halfway. It wouldn't have been fair if I had won. Also, I went inside the house when there was a lot of hatred, when people had already formed groups. It was a stressful situation.
But I have won many hearts. It is truly a game show that can change your life. Wherever I go now, I am surrounded by people.
What was the hardest thing about being in the house?
In life, when we fight with someone, we walk away. But inside the house, you have to sit with the person you've fought with and eat with them. That was a huge challenge.
Do you think Arav deserved the title?
Arav is far better than Snehan. So, yes. (Laughs)
You didn't quite get along with Snehan.
I wanted to do my best on the show, but the atmosphere inside was such that I couldn't do much even if I wanted to. I met Snehan for the first time in the house and we got along well. But then, Snehan never played the game the way it was supposed to be. I was still extremely patient in handling him. I am not vengeful and hold no grudges.
But you had a good equation with the others.
Harish is like a brother to me. And Ganesh is my buddy. He's a mature guy. I respect him a lot. He was my support system in the house.
How would you sum up your stint in the show?
I was too naive to understand what was happening initially. I know people have been talking about my emotional outbreaks. But they don't know my pain and story. People made comments without even knowing me. I haven't seen success in life though I've been in the film industry for more than a decade. I am still struggling. But I won't say I had a bad time on the show. There were lots of heartwarming moments as well. If you survive Bigg Boss, you can survive anything!
I am part of Arulnidhi's Iravukku Aayiram Kangal, and also listening to other scripts.
