Thaman to debut in Bollywood
The music director is part of Rohit Shetty's Golmaal Again
Music director Thaman is excited about his Bollywood debut with Rohit Shetty's Golmaal Again, featuring Ajay Devgn and Parineeti Chopra. "I have always wanted to compose music for Hindi films. Talks were actually on from Sarrainodu days. But the right time has come only now," he says.
Thaman adds that he likes to take time over songs, something he learnt by observing AR Rahman. "I programme my songs and also spend a lot of time structuring the tune. I don't like to dish out a tune in five minutes."
The composer firmly believes in working with like-minded technicians. "Irrespective of whether it's a commercial film or a content-driven one, I make sure to develop a bond with he directors I team up with. The more we understand each other, the better the output will be. I also feel it's important to have an emotional connect with the audience; only such music wins. Usually I wait for the lyrics to compose a tune, in order to better understand what the song requires."
Is he interested more in Telugu films? He smiles, "It's just a coincidence that most of my films are in Telugu. I am open to doing good music anywhere. The best thing about music is that language is not a barrier." He goes on to add, "I've spaced out my time in order to accommodate Hindi films. Bollywood brings you fame that other mediums cannot. The reach is more. Golmaal Again will have four songs."
Thaman, who's currently working on the Vikram-starrer Sketch, says he will be collaborating with Ilayathalapathy after his Bollywood film. "Vijay sir was the first one to call me and appreciate Osthe songs when the album was out. Official announcement about our project will be out in about three months."
Ask him about his dream project, and he grins, "I want to compose songs for Superstar's film. I grew up watching his films."
