I am game for negative roles
Veteran theatre artiste TM Karthik talks about the film roles coming his way
Theatre artiste-actor TM Karthik, who was seen in films like Nanban, Indru Netru Naalai and Dhilluku Dhuddu, is currently shooting for three projects — Indha Nilai Maarum, Karu and Bhaskar Oru Rascal.
In Indha Nilai Maarum, he plays a general manager, who works for a media house. “It’s a thriller directed by newbie Arun Kanth. My role has several shades, including comedy and evil. I’ll also be seen throughout the film. Besides me, Y GEE Mahendra, Lakshmy Ramakrishnan and Santhana Bharathi also play important characters,” he says. He doesn’t, however, have combination scenes with any of them.
Karthik believes that the length of a role is not a hindrance to a good performance. “My only idea is to do the best with what’s given to me, however small the role. For instance, I am a part of Vijay’s Karu that marks Sai Pallavi’s entry in Tamil cinema. We have already started shooting for the film in and around Chennai,” he says. Is it true he plays a cop? “I am not supposed to reveal anything about my character or the film,” he smiles.
Ask him if he’s happy about the kinds of roles he’s been receiving in Tamil cinema and he says he’s willing to do what it takes to achieve what he wants. “Though I’ve been getting comedy roles, I’d love to do negative characters eventually. It’s a dream for someone like me. I often wonder why I don’t get villain roles. I am sure I’ll find them challenging, but at the end of the day, who wouldn’t want to experiment?” he says.
Karthik is also open to doing films in Malayalam. That’s why when the makers of Bhaskar Oru Rascal approached him for a small role, he agreed immediately. “I’ve great respect for Malayalam cinema in general, because it gives preference to character artistes.”
