As Rajinikanth’s Baba is gearing up for a re-release in Chennai, here is a list of 10 other films that left such a strong cultural memory that a re-release became all but inevitable.
Baasha(1995): A film that defined commercial Tamil cinema for several generations of audiences, Baashaa came back to the theatres in a digitally remastered version in 2017
Aayirathil Oruvan(1965): The classic action-adventure film starring MGR in the lead was remastered and re-released after five decades and ran for 175 days
Ninaithaale Inikkum(1979): The classic starring Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth directed by their mentor K Balachander was digitally restored and released again in 2013
Karnan(1964): The first film to be digitally restored, Karnan was re-released on 16 March 2012 to commemorate the birth centenary of director BR Panthulu
Ulagam Sutrum Valiban(1973): The science fiction film starring the legendary MGR in the lead hit the theatres again in 2021
Sholay(1975): The classic Bollywood film was converted to 3D and released across 1000 screens in India in 2014
The Godfather(1972): The Hollywood classic was brought to the big screens again for the 50th anniversary of its release in 2022
Titanic(1997): A 3D version of the multi-oscar winning global hit was released in 2012. It will hit the theatres again in 2023 for its 25th anniversary
Sivaji: The Boss(2007): The Shankar directorial was converted to 3D and released on 12 December 2012 which falls on Rajinikanth’s birthday
Avatar(2009): Closer to the release of its long-delayed sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic was released again in 2022
