Zoya conceived the film as a family drama centere on a brother-sister relationship. She wanted to depict a more realistic sibling relationship
The film’s original cast featured Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Katrina Kaif and Hritik Roshan.
After Ranbir left, Kareena dropped out of the project. They were replaced by Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra.
Madhuri Dixit, Tabu and Raveena Tandon were considered to play Neelam Mehra. The role finally went to Shefali Shah.
