Not just Bigil, here’s the list of Thalapathy Vijay films that were mired in controversies
Three separate cases have been filed against Vijay’s upcoming film Bigil. A director named Selva has made plagiarism allegations against Atlee in Chennai High Court. However, this is not the first time a Vijay-starrer is facing such issues in the industry.
Bigil: Director Selva has claimed that Atlee has plagiarised his story, which he had registered with the South Indian Film Writers Association.
Sarkar: A writer named Varun Rajendran accused AR Murugadoss of plagiarising his story Sengol. After initial resistance, Murugadoss and Sun Picture came to a settlement with the writer.
Mersal for faced the wrath of BJP for criticising GST and Digital India. The controversy turned out to be a huge promotion for the film, which turned out to be a blockbuster.
Gopi Nainar, who is now known for the film Aramm, filed a case against AR Murugadoss for plagiarising his story. However, the case drew a blank.
Thuppakki: Upon release, the film led to a huge backlash from many Muslim outfits, which said the film depicted Muslims in a bad light. Later, the makers deleted the controversial scenes.
Nanban: Vijay played the role of a student named Panchavan Parivendar, which didn’t go down well with party members of Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi, which was founded by TR Paarivendhar.
Puli: The morning shows of Puli was cancelled due to reasons unknown. It was also the time when the Income Tax Department conducted raids on houses of many celebrities including Vijay.
Thalaivaa was delayed by about 11 days from its initial release date. While it was released in other parts of the country on time, the film’s release was stopped in Tamil Nadu.
Kaavalan, a remake of Malayalam film Bodyguard, released on January 15, 2011. But the morning shows of the film were cancelled irking fans of Vijay.
Puthiya Geethai: The film was initially titled as Geethai, but after protests from certain outfits, the Vijay-starrer was rechristened as Puthiya Geethai.
