Just like previous Ajith movies, the project was shot without a title. The film was titled as Vedalam in September 2015.
Production was briefly delayed because Ajith Kumar wanted to spend time with his pregnant wife following the completion of Yennai Arindhaal (2015).
The role of Ajith's sister in the film took considerably longer to finalise, with several actresses approached to portray the character.
Sri Divya, Nithya Menen and Bindu Madhavi all turned down the opportunity, with the latter saying she was only interested in playing the lead actress opposite Ajith.
After further unsuccessful negotiations with Parvathy Nair, actress Lakshmi Menon was signed on to play the role of Ajith's sister.
Santhanam was first signed to play a local taxicab owner at Kolkata. Soori later replaced Santhanam in the film, after the latter became busy with his own productions.
A song sequence, featuring Ajith and Shruti Haasan, was shot in Milan, Italy.
Ajith was injured during the final day of the shoot, causing a minor delay in the film's completion.
Despite his injury, Ajith began dubbing for the film immediately, in order to ensure that it would release on Diwali day, 2015.
The music was composed by Anirudh Ravichander, collaborating for the first time with Ajith Kumar.
This was also Anirudh's first film with director Siva.
Vedhalam completed more than 175 days of theatrical run, and yielded a distributor share of 40 crore in Tamil Nadu.
Vedhalam was remade in Bengali in 2018 as Sultan: The Saviour by Raja Chanda starring Jeet
