18 years after the release of his ambitious film, Athbhutha Dweepu, director Vinayan has announced its sequel. Unni Mukundan will be headlining the film along with Guinness Pakru, who played one of the leads in the first part. The upcoming film is scripted by Abhilash Pillai, with whom Unni had recently collaborated in Malikappuram.
Athbhutha Dweepu is a fantasy film set on an other-worldly island where the men all are vertically challenged while the women are of normal height. Starring Prithviraj, Mallika Kapoor, Jagathy Sreekumar and a host of other short actors, the film entered the Guinness Book of Records for having the most vertically challenged actors in a single film. Pakru also entered the record books for being the shortest actor (76 cm in height) to play a full-length character in a film.
While announcing Athbhutha Dweepu 2 through social media, Unni Mukundan expressed his excitement in teaming up with 'one of the most daring filmmakers of the country'. He also added that it would be one of the many projects he is planning to do with Abhilash Pillai.
Interestingly, Abhilash had approached Unni to discuss another subject, which was also supposed to be directed by Vinayan, when the actor suggested the idea of doing a sequel to 'one of his favourite films'. Vinayan, who was also eager to do the second part for Athbhutha Dweepu immediately agreed. The director has confirmed that the film will begin production in 2024 after he wraps up his next film with Siju Wilson.
