The 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will honour celebrated Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura with the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to cinema.  Saura is one of the trio of all-time greats of his country-- Luis Bunuel and Pedro Almodovar. The IFFI event begins in Goa on November 20.

Saura, who has been active in the film industry since 1955 and is still working behind the camera, turned 90 on January 2 of this year. The 53rd IFFI will honour Saura and show some of his accolade-winning works.

Last year, the American living legend Martin Scorsese was honoured with the Satyajith Ray Award for lifetime achievement and he also addressed the gathering virtually.

Saura shot into prominence in the 1980s for his Flamenco trilogy -- Bodas de Sangre, Carmen and El Amor Brujo, in which he combined dramatic content and a celebration of flamenco, a folkloric artform.

Among the heaps of awards and nominations he has won include two nominations for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for Mama Turns 100 (Mamá cumple cien años--1979), Carmen (1983), which went on to win the BAFTA award for the same category, and Tango (1998).
