76th BAFTA: Shaunak Sen's All that Breathes misses the cut; Navalny wins Best Documentary

Shaunak Sen's All That Breathes, the Indian documentary that is currently in the running for an Academy Award, missed out on adding yet another feather to its hat at the BAFTAs. In the 76th edition of the awards ceremony, All That Breathes was nominated in the Best Documentary category, but it lost to the Russian documentary, Navalny.

Directed by Daniel Roher, Navalny revolves around the Russian Opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and the events related to his poisoning, and the subsequent investigation. Filming began shortly after Navalny came out of a coma and went on until his arrest in January 2021: according to the main character of the film, the film crew was next to him even at the border control at the airport.

The film premiered on January 25, 2022, at the Sundance Film Festival as the final title in the US Documentary Competition section, where it won the Festival Favourite Award and the Audience Award for the US Documentary Competition.

Incidentally, All That Breathes was the only Indian representation at the BAFTAs, which is an annual event that celebrates the best of national, and foreign films, and documentaries of any language that was screened in British cinemas.
