Gauri Shinde's award-winning comedy-drama, English Vinglish, starring late legend Sridevi, is releasing in 6000 theatres on the Chinese mainland on February 24, 2023.

English Vinglish premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received a 5-minute standing ovation. The film was released theatrically in India in 2012, becoming both a critical and commercial success.

Starring Sridevi, English Vinglish narrates the story of a quiet, sweet-tempered housewife who endures small slights from her well-educated husband and daughter every day because of her inability to speak and understand English. Her attempt to learn the language helps her rediscover herself and reassert her value as a mother and a wife.

The film marked Sridevi's return to the big screen after a 15-year hiatus. It was submitted as India's official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category for 2012.

Talking about the China release of English Vinglish, Kumar Ahuja, COO, of Eros International, said, “Indian films have gradually gained a foothold in the competitive Chinese movie market, the second biggest in the world. We have seen a rising demand for Indian films in China Mainland, especially the ones which are culturally driven. We are excited for the audience in China to marvel at this masterpiece showcasing one of the most memorable performances by the late Bollywood superstar Sridevi.”

Sridevi passed away in her hotel room in Dubai in 2018. The cause of her death was revealed as 'accidental drowning' following a loss of consciousness.
