Plea against Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn for "promoting tobacco products"

Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh have landed in a legal soup. As per reports, they have been accused of "promoting consumption of gutkha and tobacco" in a petition filed in a Bihar court on Thursday. Shah Rukh and Ajay feature in advertisements of tobacco brand Vimal. Amitabh had signed on as brand ambassador for Kamla Pasand before cutting his ties with the brand. Ranveer Singh has also endorsed Kamla Pasand.

The petition was filed by social activist Tamanna Hashmi before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Muzaffarpur. The activist, in her plea states that commercials featuring these actors encouraged people to consume the items being advertised. The prayer has sought directions to the police that FIR be lodged against the actors under IPC sections 311 (punishment to a thug), 420 (cheating) and 467 and 468 (forgery). It is likely to be taken up for hearing soon.

Recently, Akshay Kumar, who appeared in Vimal ads, cut ties with the company after his fans accused him of promoting tobacco. The ad also featured Shah Rukh and Ajay.

In October 2021, Amitabh Bachchan terminated his contract with Kamla Pasand. In November, Amitabh sent a legal notice to the company after it continued to air commercials featuring him despite termination of the contract.
