Defense Ministry rejects Onir's script inspired by a gay army officer; filmmaker receives support online 

The script of filmmaker Onir's next, inspired by the life of a gay army officer, was recently rejected by the Ministry of Defence. The filmmaker was reportedly inspired by an interview of the officer, where the latter discussed the problems he faced due to his sexual orientation. 

"75 years of independence, more than three years since the Supreme Court of India had decriminalised homosexuality but as a society, we are a long way from being treated as equals. While 56 countries across the world accept LGBTQ in the army,it is still illegal in the Indian army," Onir tweeted.

After the news about the rejection came out,  journalists and activists voiced their support to the filmmaker.

Needless to say, I stand in solidarity with @IamOnir. I urge everyone who always argued that 377 was read down because or the current political regime to urge defence minister @rajnathsingh to ensure that #WeAre is made.

Journalist Namrata Joshi showed her support by questioning the need for such regulations.
