Vidya Balan: I hated Vijay Varma in Darlings

Vijay Varma’s performance as Alia Bhatt’s abusive husband Hamza Sheikh in Netflix’s Darlings was so good, it made people hate his guts. One of these ‘haters’ is actor Vidya Balan.

In a recent interview, Balan, at a round table interview alongside Varma and a few other celebrities revealed that she truly hated Hamza from Darlings. “When I watched Darlings, I hated Vijay Varma so much. Siddharth (her husband) said you should call him and tell him. I said no, I don't want to talk to him. I just hate him,” she said.

Varma gave a menacing performance as Hamza in the Jasmeet K Reen directorial. In an interview, he had said that he hates the character “to the core”.

“It is a difficult experience watching yourself be this man you hate. But I am done watching this film. I am never going to revisit it. I know it for a fact. What we had to do while making we did, what I had to see while watching, I have seen. I left the film soon after shooting it,” he had told The Indian Express.

He added, "I was really scared when I saw the film, I thought ‘Waat lag jayegi meri’ (I will be in trouble). I knew the film was working, the beats of the film were landing well. When I was watching it, I was gripped in fear. Every time this character appears on screen, it is not easy to not be fearful. You are either filled with rage or some kind of dread, it just evokes that kind of response. I thought how will I get away from this? Hamza did receive a lot of hate across platforms."

When it comes to other projects, Varma will be next seen in The Devotion of Suspect X, in which he will be seen sharing screen space with Kareena Kapoor Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat. Apart from that, he has an exciting slate of projects ahead including Dahaad with Sonakshi Sinha, Sumit Saxena’s untitled next, and Mirzapur 3.
