Killers of the Flower Moon receive a 9-min ovation at Cannes.

On Saturday, veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. The film, which stars  Leonardo Di Caprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone, received a standing ovation of 9 minutes marking the biggest applause for a film at the festival so far.

The 3 hours and 26-minute drama tell the story of a dark, largely unexplored chapter of American history. Set in northeastern Oklahoma, the plot follows events as members of the Osage Nation are murdered in a systematic fashion for sinister ends.

Scorsese, who returned to the festival for the first time since 1985's After Hours, marks his seventh collaboration with Di Caprio and the eleventh collaboration with De Niro.

The film, which is backed by Apple with a big budget of over $200, is scheduled to be released in select theaters on October 6 before a wide release in the United States on October 20 by Paramount Pictures.

According to the reports, after the film's screening, the loudest screams were directed at Gladstone, who plays an Osage woman betrayed by her greedy husband for her wealth. She earned rave reviews and fought back tears as the crowd inside the Palais clapped loudly.
