Anthony Hopkins joins gladiator series Those About to Die

Multiple Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins has reportedly joined the cast of filmmaker Roland Emmerich’s upcoming series titled Those About to Die. The series revolves around gladiators in ancient Rome and Hopkins will reportedly play Roman emperor Vespasian.

He is the first person to be announced as the cast member of the series, which is being developed for NBC’s streaming service Peacock. Best known for disaster films like Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012, Emmerich will direct and executive produce the series.

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Robert Rodat, known for penning Saving Private Ryan, is confirmed as the showrunner for the series. Described as an epic historical drama, the official synopsis for the series says, “Those About to Die is set within the complex and corrupt world of spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition in ancient Rome featuring an ensemble of diverse characters across the many layers of Roman society where sports, politics, and business intersect and collide.”

Anthony Hopkins is best known for his performances in The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, The Two Popes, and The Elephant Man.
