Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans wins the people’s choice award at TIFF

Auteur filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film titled The Fabelmans wins the people’s choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival. La La Land, 12 Years a Slave, Nomadland, Jojo Rabbit, and Belfast are some of the films that have previously won the people’s choice award at TIFF.

The film revolves around young Sammy Fabelman and how exposure to films  ignited his passion for the art of storytelling during the formative years of his life. The Fabelmans is based on Spielberg’s own real-life experiences and the Fablemans family shown in the film is loosely based on his own family. 

The film is directed by the veteran director based on a script that he co-wrote with Tony Kushner. Set in post world war 2 era, The Fabelmans tries to faithfully adapt the culture of that era, including elements like antisemitism and the rise of Jazz music. The film is produced by Spielberg’s own Amblin Entertainment along with Universal Pictures.

The film stars stars Gabriel LaBelle, Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, and Paul Dano. The Fablemans is currently scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 11 November 2022
