Empire of Light trailer: Sam Mendes registers his love for cinema

The first official trailer for Sam Mendes’ upcoming film Empire of Light has been released online. The film is a romantic drama set in a seaside English town in the 1980s, it revolves around an old cinema theatre and two people who bond over their love for cinema. The trailer shows stunning visuals and poignant performances from heavyweights like Olivia Coleman.

Apart from Coleman, the cast of the film also includes Micheal Ward, Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hannah Onslow, Crystal Clarke, Toby Jones, and Colin Firth. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has co-produced the film under his banner Neal Street Productions along with his frequent collaborator Pippa Harris. Mendes and Harris had both previously worked on the Academy Award-winning 1917.

The film had its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival and received critical praise. The film also reunites Sam Mendes with legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, they both had previously worked together in 1917 and Skyfall. Empire of Light is currently scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 9 December.
