94th Academy Awards: Eight Oscar categories to be awarded offline this year

The Academy has decided to present the award for several major categories off the air, in an attempt to present a streamlined and television-friendly broadcast. Eight of the honours (Documentary short, Film editing, Makeup and hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design, Animated short, Live-action short, Sound) will instead be awarded during offline parts of the show and then edited into the telecast. The Oscars in total gives awards to 23 categories, but the show has been commonly criticized for being long and its ratings have taken a toll in recent years.

The awards that will be handed out earlier in the ceremony are for documentary short, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short and sound. The ceremony will start one hour before the on-camera portion begins to accommodate the changes.

Clips of the speeches will be tucked into the live televised broadcast. This approach has been implemented in Tony Awards and other televised ceremonies to recognize technical achievements.

The award ceremony will happen on March 27, 2022, and will be hosted by Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall.
