The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards were announced by actors Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross. Jane Campion’s westerner The Power of the Dog (TPOTD) received the highest number of nods, with its total count standing at 12, including Best Picture and Best Director for Jane. History was made as she became the first female director to receive a second nomination (she received her first for the 1993 film, The Piano). TPOTD gained an edge over the science-fiction epic Dune--another crowd favourite--with its nominations in the acting categories, including for Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst in the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories, respectively.

Dune came a close second with 10 nominations, including Best Picture and recognition in technical categories such as Best Cinematography and Best Editing. Denis Villeneuve’s absence in the Best Director category, however, is a surprise, considering how well the film has done in this year’s nominations.

Other films in the Best Picture category that scored multiple nominations include West Side StoryKing Richard, and Belfast with six nominations each, and Nightmare Alley, Licorice Pizza, Drive My Car, and Don’t Look up, which earned four nominations. The Japanese drama Drive My Car’s entry into the Best Picture category came across as a welcoming surprise, with filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi also earning a Best Director nomination. It is the first Japanese film in the Oscars history to earn the Best Picture nomination.

While Spencer and Tick Tick… Boom! didn’t leave a mark in other categories, the lead actors who essayed real life personalities, Andrew Garfield (Jonathan Larson) and Kristen Stewart (Princess Diana) made the cut in acting categories. Among actors, Troy Kotsur became the first deaf male actor to get an Oscar nomination for performance as an affable father in CODA. The film is incidentally the first to feature a predominantly deaf cast and earn a Best Picture nomination.

Steven Spielberg earned his eighth directing nomination for West Side Story while his fellow nominee Kenneth Branagh broke the Oscar record as well with, now, a total of seven nominations in seven different categories.

The Indian connection with the Oscars this year is strong with Writing with Fire—directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh—getting nominated under the Best Documentary Feature category. However, the much-vaunted Tamil film Jai Bhim bowed out of contention from the Best Picture category.

The Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 27.
