James Cameron's Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water finally hit the theatres and has become one of the highest grossing films of 2022. While it took 13 years for the director to make thr sequel, it has also made James to let go off certain projects.

In an interaction with Empire magazine, James was asked whether he felt bad for losing the opportunities to tell other stories, to which the filmmaker replied, "The first is that the world of Avatar is so sprawling that I can tell most of the stories I want to tell within it and try many of the stylistic techniques that I hope to explore. And secondly, yes… our time as artists is finite. I will always mourn some of the stories that I don’t get to make.”

However, James said that he found "great satisfaction" when other filmmakers were able to work on his ideas. It is to be noted that the 2009 thriller film Strange Days which has story by James Cameron and directed by Kathryn Bigelow. James also wrote the screenplay of Alita: Battle Angel, the 2019 action film directed by Robert Rodriguez. The film was first announced with James but was later handed over to Robert since the former was busy with Avatar sequel.
