Oscars Shortlist: Chhello Show in last 15; RRR gets Best Original Song consideration for Naatu Naatu

The Oscars are upon us, and the first step of many is finally here. With just a month left for the nominations to be announced for the 95th Academy Awards, the nominations shortlist for 10 categories were revealed today. 

The 10 categories are Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.

It was a moment of pride for the Indian film industry as Pan Nalin's Gujarati film, Chhello Show, India's official entry to the Oscars, made the cut to the last 15 in the Best International Feature category. Unfortunately, the much-hyped RRR and Kantara missed out on the race. However, it was not all bleak for the SS Rajamouli directorial, which has taken the world by storm.

The Naatu Naatu song, featuring the RRR leads, NTR Jr and Ramcharan, and composed by MM Keeravani, was shortlisted in the Best Original Song category. If it makes the final list, this will be the first time a song from an Indian film would be nominated at the Oscars. While AR Rahman was nominated (and won) for Slumdog Millionaire (lyricist Gulzar too bagged a nomination and win), and 127 Hours, Bombay Jayshri was nominated for her lyrics in Pi's Lullaby from Life of Pi. 

Meanwhile. the final nominations for the Oscars will be announced on January 24, 2023, and the Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre.
