Netflix cancels animated film Ember from Klaus director

Netflix had reportedly cancelled an animated film that was supposed to be helmed by Sergio Pablos who is best known for making the 2019 film, Klaus. The film, titled Ember, was supposed to be made through traditional hand-drawn animation. Ember joins the recent list of animated films that were axed by the streaming giant, Netflix had earlier cancelled films like Antiracist Baby, Ava DuVernay’s Wings of Fire, and Adam Kline’s With Kind Regards From Kindergarten.

According to reports, the move to cancel animated projects is a creative decision and not related to budgetary constraints. Despite the reasoning, it is well known that animated projects take longer to develop and require hours of dedicated technical effort, which ends up demanding a higher budget.

With the rights to Ember still remaining with the director, he might be able to take the film to other streaming services. Sergio Pablos’ directorial debut Klaus was Netflix’s first original animated film, it went on to be nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards.
