Johnny Depp returns to the director's chair after 25 years

Johnny Depp is returning to direct a film after twenty-five years. The actor’s last directing gig was for The Brave, which had himself and Marlon Brando in the lead and was released in 1997. The film titled Modigliani is a biopic on the prolific Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani who lived during the early 1900s.

The film is based on a stage play written by Dennis McIntyre, it was adapted for the screen by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski. The film follows the artist’s life while he was struggling to make a  living in Paris in 1916. The story focuses on the events that transpire during a 48-hour window that changes his life and cements his place in history as an artistic genius.

Modigliani will also be co-produced by veteran actor Al Pacino, while Barry Navidi, known for making King Lear, will be co-producing the film. The production is expected to kickstart in early 2023 in Europe. While it is currently unsure if Depp will star in the film, the makers are yet to finalise the principal cast for the film. Johnny Depp will next be seen playing King Louis XV in the period drama Jeanne du Barry, directed by French actor/filmmaker Maïwenn.
