Ben Kingsley’s Salvador Dali biopic to close TIFF

The biopic based on the prolific painter Salvador Dali, titled Dalíland, has been selected to close the 47th Toronto International Film Festival. The film is directed by American Psycho fame Mary Harron and stars Oscar winner Ben Kingsley as Dali. Ezra Miller, who plays the superhero Flash in the DC films, is playing the younger version of Dali.

The film also stars Barbara Sukowa, Christopher Briney, Alexander Beyer, Avital Lvova, Rupert Graves, Andreja Pejić, Suki Waterhouse, and Mark McKenna in supporting roles. Ezra Miller’s name was reportedly removed from the cast list by TIFF officials following reports of the actor being charged with felony burglary.

Talking about the film in an interview, the director said, “We started looking at Dali in the 1970s, the older Dali, with flashbacks to the younger Dali, which are rendered like an old movie. That format really excited me. The story is all played out through this kind of Nick Carraway figure, who comes into Dali’s life as an assistant and sees it all.”

Sally El Hosaini's The Swimmers is confirmed to open the film festival while Steven Spielberg's autobiographical film The Fabelmans is also set to screen at the festival.
