Jason Blum on Paranormal Activity franchise: It has been enough already

In a recent interview with Variety, Jason Blum, the producer behind several hit horror titles, hinted at the end of the popular found-footage horror franchise, Paranormal Activity. 

The first Paranormal Activity film, directed by Oren Peli, began as an independent project in 2007 and became one of the most profitable films of all time, grossing over $190 million against a minimal production budget of $15,000. The franchise later spanned into seven films in total, with the final film, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, releasing in October last year.

Blum told Variety, "It has been enough already. That last Paranormal Activity movie was terrible. With Halloween, we only had the rights to three movies, so we said: Halloween Ends! It ends for Blumhouse, at least. With other things, you just have this feeling it’s time to put them to bed. It would come back if some director I love, like Scott Derrickson, said: ‘I have a great idea for a Paranormal Activity’ movie. But it’s not something I want to do [at the moment]."

Speaking about The Exorcist sequel trilogy that is currently in development at Blumhouse, the producer said in the same interview, “Hopefully, we will do the same thing with The Exorcist that we did with Halloween – make it in a way that’s fresh and worth revisiting, different enough so that people are happy we did it.”
