Captain Marvel: Trailer breakdown
As Captain Marvel crashes into a Blockbuster video store (the antecedent to current day streaming giants like Netflix), she awakens to the lights of an approaching cavalcade -- possibly led by Agent Coulson, the man whose death launched the formation of the Avengers in the self titled 2012 film. As Fury's voiceover starts, you see Captain Marvel stranded in a metro station confused as if she has been transported out of time. Is Captain Marvel then a future hero transported back in time to the 90s? Maybe. Maybe not.
As the trailer lets us linger on that question, we see an operating table in a dark undergound lair. A man in a white shirt is holding a machine gun on his right while he nurses the left side of the face. Is this Fury right after the attack that robs him of his left eye? The doctor is experimenting on what seems to be a dead alien. We then see a spaceship appear out of nowhere (we aren't yet sure if it is a Ravager ship or a Kree ship) and Captain Marvel using her famous photonic blasts. A suave two-eyed Nick Fury then comes in as Captain Marvel recounts her "hard to explain story." We see a futuristic planet that somehow seems very similar to Sakaar, the world ruled by Grandmaster where Thor and Hulk fight it out in Thor:Ragnarok. But then again it could also be a completely different planet as is hinted at later in the trailer.
We then cut back to her memories of when she was a US Airforce pilot who went by the name of Carol Danvers. Then we move on to a series of quick cut images of Carol falling down at various stages of her life (training, childhood, when she plays softball and finally at a foreign planet). When she wakes up, she is in a suit and is suspended upside down between what looks eerily like the setup that first housed the mind stone of Loki in Avengers (2012). Maybe it is to signify her memory loss/memory wipe?
Cut to her and a few other Kree soldiers walking into a spaceship. We then see Denarian Saal for the first time since Guardians of the Galaxy. Denarian Saal was the brave soldier of the Nova Corps of Xandar who died trying to keep the Dark Aster from landing. We then see a shot of Ronan looking at Earth. Did Ronan invade Earth at some point without being able to conquer it? Was Captain Marvel the one who protected it back then? We then see the famous pager that was seen in the post credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War. Maybe this is the final scene of Captain Marvel.
And then we see a group wearing the face mask that Yondu used to save Star Lord in Guardians of The Galaxy 2. Are they the Nova Force? This specific shot and the figure that comes in a bit later--famous in the comics as the original Nova who goes by the name of Richard Rider--makes you wonder if that indeed is the case. Remember the peace that Xandar and Kree had? Maybe it all started here.
My hypothesis: It looks like Carol Danvers, a space pilot from Earth, is kidnapped by the Kree, brainwashed into fighting for them. But somehow, thanks to Nova and the Nova Force, she turns against the Kree and saves Xandar. Once Ronan learns of this, he vows revenge and tries to conquer Earth. Carol is sent to Earth by the Xandarians but she suffers from memory loss and loses control of her powers. She then makes friends with Nick Fury and the SHIELD, and saves Earth from an invading Ronan with her full powers. Knowing how dangerous her powers are, she helps set up the A.V.E.N.G.E.R.S Initiative with Nick Fury and goes off somewhere with the trusted pager which now beeps thanks to the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
Captain Marvel is scheduled for release on March 8, 2019
