Madras HC declares Nadigar Sangam elections invalid, orders a re-election

The election result was withheld for about seven months now. Justice Kalyana Sundaram noted that the electoral list was made with irregularities and called the election invalid.

The court has now appointed Justice B Gokul Dass, a retired High Court Judge, to conduct re-election within three months. In the meantime, PV Geetha, the special officer appointed by the Tamil Nadu government, will oversee the activities of Nadigar Sangam.

The incumbent members, including Nasser and Vishal, referred to as the Pandavar Ani battled it out against the Sankaradas Ani led by Bhagyaraj in the June elections.

Speaking to Cinema Express, actor Udhaya, who is part of Sankaradas' team, welcomed the verdict of the court - "Sankaradas team would have won the election any which way. Despite all the actions against us, there was strong support for us. However, this is a fair judgement because the election was not conducted properly. It was all in haste. Many members were deprived of the postal vote facility."

He adds, "I hope the opposition respects the decision and doesn't continue to prolong the issue. It would only affect the numerous members of Nadigar Sangam, who are suffering without pension money."

However, the Pandavar Ani headed by Nasser has resolved to approach the Supreme Court. Poochi Murugan, who contested on behalf of the Nasser team, says, "There are provisions to take the case forward to Supreme Court and we have decided to do so on Monday. Also, it is funny that the opposite team is claiming that further appeal would affect the members. They were the ones who asked the judge to delay the election counting. Where was their concern for the pensioners for the past seven months?"
