The Indian connect at Oscars 2019

Period. End of Sentence, a documentary film set in India that talks about the taboos around menstruation and featuring 'Pad Man' Arunchalam Muruganantham, has made it to the top five nominees of the Documentary Short Subject category. The other nominees in this list are Black Sheep, End Game, Lifeboat and A Night At The Garden. Executive produced by Guneet Monga, the film is co-produced by Monga's Sikhya Entertainment, which has delivered films like The Lunchbox and Masaan in the past.

Ecstatic about making the cut, Monga said, "We made it... It is beyond everything we thought."

The film is about women in India fighting against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation and delving upon the work of real life 'Pad Man' Arunachalam Muruganathan. Directed by award-winning Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi, the film is created by The Pad Project, an organisation established by an inspired group of students at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles and their teacher, Melissa Berton.

The 26-minute film follows girls and women in Hapur in northern India and their experience with the installation of a pad machine in their village.

Meanwhile, another Indian connect can be found in Amblin Entertainment that has got 10 nominations between three of its films - Green Book, First Man and Ready Player One.  The company, founded by Steven Spielberg, has a joint venture with Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Entertainment.

"It is exciting news, and truly says a lot about how a compelling story always works. We are extremely proud to be associated with these films and we hope for the best," said Shibashish Sarkar, Chief Operating Officer, Reliance Entertainment.

The 91st Academy Awards will be held on February 24.
