I hope people will accept me playing a bubbly teenager: Ramya Nabessan

I hope people will accept me playing a bubbly teenager: Ramya Nabessan

In the midst of shooting, Ramya Nambessan takes some time to talk to us about her upcoming film, Natpuna Ennanu Theriyuma. She starts off by explaining why she chose such a light-hearted film. "I wanted to dispel the notion that I'm only up for mature and serious roles," says the actor, who was last seen in a cameo in Karthik Subbaraj's Mercury. "I wanted to explore urban characters and Natpuna Ennanu Theriyuma fit the bill."

Surprisingly, Ramya admits that the film is nothing new to Tamil cinema. "It's a normal story about three guys and a girl, but the treatment is different. It's a total entertainer with loads of humour but without any crass innuendos," she says, adding that her role will be different too. "People will see the cheesy side of my acting in this film. Every artiste should try to be versatile. After doing serious films like Sethupathi and Sathya, I'm hoping people will accept me as a bubbly teenager. I'm interested to see how the audience react to my role."

Asked about the trailer's resemblance to films like Indru Poi Naalai Vaa (1981) and Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya (2013), Ramya says, "At the end of the day, all films are about love, revenge, and drama, but the way it's executed is different. Every director has a vision. As far as Natpuna Ennanu Theriyuma is concerned, it is about today's urban youngsters. Director Shiva Aravind has incorporated a lot of scenes that are based on incidents from his actual life. I believe that a film succeeds when it makes the audience believe that the events are really happening."

The actor has no qualms about being part of a team without any well-known names. "When I did Pizza, it was a new team and now, they're all famous. While I won't go so far as to say Natpuna Ennanu Theriyuma will change the trend of Tamil cinema, I found the script to be very exciting and entertaining. It's a young and vibrant team."

Speaking of Pizza, I point out that Natpuna Ennanu Theriyuma's lead Kavin played a small role in Pizza, and Ramya says, "He appears in one of the first shots in Pizza. Incidentally, I realised that only after I met him on the sets." While one would expect from the trailer that the cast would have had a fun time at the shoot, Ramya paints a different picture. "I'm a boring person (laughs). I'm not a prankster and I don't gel easily with everyone. It's because I'm serious when it comes to work. Also when we were shooting for this film, the Vardha cyclone hit the state, which led to location issues. Generally, it's only after the shoots when I usually relax a bit."

She is also a part of Vijay Sethupathi's Seethakaathi, marking her third collaboration with him after Pizza and Sethupathi. "It's actually a cameo and I play myself. Interestingly, I don't have any combination scenes with him in it. I loved Balaji Tharaneetharan's Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and I'm sure Seethakaathi will be a milestone film for Vijay Sethupathi," says Ramya, who doesn't mind doing cameos as long as she gets to work with good technicians. "It's a learning experience at the end of the day. Even if it's just one or two scenes, when working with an experienced filmmaker, we'll get moulded better. That's why I did Seethakaathi as well as Mercury."

Though Ramya has acted in all four South Indian languages, she seems to have found her footing in Tamil cinema. "I've done Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films, but I'm concentrating more on Tamil now. I might do a Malayalam film soon, but that's yet to be confirmed. My music and shows keep me busy as well, not to mention all the Bharathanatyam shows," says the actor who has spent almost a decade in the industry. She hopes to get a female-centric film sometime. "But of course, it has to be the right team, and a brilliant script."
