Umapathy: One step at a time

The actor's second film, Maniyar Kudumbam, directed by his father released last Friday

One-film-old Umapathy Ramaiah is glad that his second film, Maniyar Kudumbam, directed by his father Thambi Ramaiah, is getting a lot of good will. Ask him how the experience of working with his father is, and he says, "It's actually more fun to be on the sets with him than at home. Every cast member -- Vivek Prasanna, Sriranjani ma'am, Sreeja ma'am and everyone else -- was very friendly. Moreover, in this film's set, there was no pen and paper. Appa would narrate the lines and he'd make us repeat them."

The young actor heaps praises on how his father ability as a technician. "He's a very jovial person and keeps us all happy and energetic. Even in serious scenes, thanks to him, Vivek and I would have to work hard to control our laughter. That was the tough part actually."

Umapathy calls his role in the film an "appa-va paathu valarum paiyan." He adds, "I play a son who looks up to his father and since he doesn't work, the son doesn't either. Remember how in older films they talk about how the family has enough money to do nothing for generations and still survive? The film is about such a family. To that equation, add a girl who is strong and independent, and one who has a Tom and Jerry relationship with my character."

The actor is currently shooting for Cheran's next project in which he'll once again be working with his father. "It's a good graph as it feels like graduating from school to college. The learning experience is invaluable." The untitled film is a family drama again. "I play an RJ in the film; so I visited a radio station to learn the nuances of being one. Similar to Cheran sir's previous films, the situation is the villain in this film.
