En Kadhali Scene Podura Movie Review: A mess of a movie that does not know what it wants to be

What starts out as a comedy, goes on to become a murder mystery and god knows what else
Rating:(1 / 5)

A lot of effort seems to have gone into the making of En Kadhali Scene Podura, written and directed by Ram Sevaa. There are numerous attempts to make the comedy work and cover sensitive issues such as dowry, politics in police departments, and parenting. Unfortunately, none of these attempts are successful.

Take the very first sequence, for instance—an exchange in a temple between a priest and the protagonist (Mahesh), where the former after performing the aarti  blatantly demands money. Or the exchange between two friends, where one says, "Kiss adicha kadhal, aranja modhal" when explaining how to differentiate between love and hate. These are actually some of the less disturbing attempts at comedy in this film.

One doesn't go into a film like En Kadhali Scene Podura with high expectations. But is it too much to expect a basic level of competency in filmmaking? Shouldn't at least a few of these jokes work?

Director: Ram Sevaa
Cast: Angadi Theru Mahesh, Shalu, Mano Bala, Narrian

While the first half is filled with distasteful humour, things only get worse as we approach the intermission. Out of the blue, the film turns into... a murder mystery! From this point on, we take an exhausting journey to uncover the killer through the lens of the protagonist. While the poorly-written plots to tackle the killer bring us on our knees, the diversions from this trajectory drop us flat on our face.

There's a backstory involving how a certain character is caught violating the law and how this same person later joins the police force. The justification? Loopholes in the Indian police force. Another sequence involves a discussion of dowry rates based on how many men a woman has previously been with. With so many films going under the censor board's axe for foul language, nudity, and violence, for once, I caught myself actually wishing that the ideas in this film had been reviewed.

En Kadhali Scene Podura is a film that throws many things at us, in the hopes of elicting some response, any response, but the only response we offer is regret for having sat through this mess.
