From F1 to Hamnet: 10 Oscar-nominated films to catch in theatres

F1 (2025)

With multiple Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture, Joseph Kosinski’s F1 has been re-released in PVR theatres as a part of the Oscars Film Festival. The film follows the comeback of a veteran to Formula One racing to represent a failing racing team and mentor its young prodigy at the request of his former teammate. It stars Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, and Javier Bardem, among others.

Sinners (2025)

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, with a record-breaking number of Oscar nominations, will also be re-released in PVR theatres for their ‘Oscars Film Festival’. Sinners, critically appreciated for its sociopolitical commentary on racial discrimination and segregation, follows two siblings who leave their troubled past and return to their hometown, only to find a bigger evil awaiting their arrival. The film stars Michael B Jordon in a dual role, alongside Jack O’Connell, Hailee Steinfeld, and Delroy Lindo, among others.

One Battle After Another (2025)

This action-thriller tells the story of covert revolutionaries rallying back into their mission to rescue a team member as one of their older enemiesre-surfaces after 16 years. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another has been nominated in 13 Oscar categories, including Best Picture. The cast includes Leonardo Di Caprio, Sean Penn, Benicio Dele Toro, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti.

Zootopia 2 (2025)

Nominated under the ‘Best Animation Feature’ category, Zootopia 2 is running now in PVR theatres for the Oscars Film Festival. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde take off from where they left in the previous film to once again save their city, Zootopia, this time against reptiles. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman star in the sequel.

Bugonia (2025)

This psychological thriller follows two men who, inspired by conspiracy ideologies, kidnap a wealthy CEO, believing her to be an alien intent on destroying Earth. The film has been nominated in four Oscar categories, including ‘Best Picture,’ and is part of the said festival in PVR theatres. Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Aidan Delbis are part of the cast.

Marty Supreme (2025)

With nine nominations at the Oscars, including ‘Best Picture’, Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme follows an ambitious underdog navigating the high-stakes world of ping-pong while confronting ego and obsession. Timothee Chalamet is one of the frontrunners for the Best Actor award for his performance as an egotistical table tennis player who is willing to go to any lengths to achieve what he wants.

Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)

Jake Sully and Neytiri mourn the loss of their son while protecting their community from a new tribe, the Ash people. Resuming from Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), the film follows Pandora as it is once again attacked by Colonel Quaritch. With two Oscar nominations, the James Cameroon film continues its successful run in India after a brief gap away from theatres. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are among the returning cast for the sequel.

Weapons (2025)

This psychological horror film is set in a town where all but one child from the same class disappear on the same night at the same time. The story that unfolds questions who or what is behind the mysterious event. Nominated for the Oscars in the ‘Best Performance by an Actress in the Supporting Role’ category, Zach Cregger’s film is among the few horror features in the PVR festival. Amy Madigan, Julia Garner, and Josh Brolin lead the star-studded cast.

Hamnet (2025)

With eight Oscar nominations, including one each for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ and ‘Best Picture’, Hamnet is releasing in India around three months after its debut in the USA. Directed by Chloe Zhao and written by Maggie O’Farrell, Hamnet is a film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s life. It explores a fictionalised and inspired story of the death of Shakespeare’s teenaged son, Hamnet, and how the parents cope with the grief. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal play the central roles.

The Secret Agent (2025)

Originally released in Portuguese, The Secret Agent was screened at The Cannes Film Festival in May last year. The story follows a technology expert who flees from his violent past to seek refuge with his son, only to find out that his hometown is not as safe as he expected it to be. Nominated for four Oscars, including ‘Best Picture' and ‘Best International Feature’, the film is releasing in India soon. The cast includes Wagner Moura, Robson Andrade, Rubens Santos, and Licinio Januario.
