Actor Nicholas Cage, who was last seen in The Carpenter's Son, is all set to join hands with director John Woo once again after nearly three decades for an upcoming crime epic film Gambino. Their last film together was the cult action hit Face/Off (1997).
Woo is helming the film from a script written by Bad Boys writer George Gallo and Green Book writer/producer Nick Vallelonga. The film will be launched at AFM.
According to the makers, the film follows Nicholas Cage's character as Carlo Gambino, a butcher’s son from Sicily, who ruled New York’s underworld with quiet authority. But when his death sends shockwaves through the city, Pulitzer-winning journalist Jimmy Breslin follows the trail he left behind to uncover the man beneath the legend. "Through the voices of those who loved him and those who feared him, Breslin peels back the composure that masked Gambino’s ruthlessness, revealing how this outsider rose to redefine power, loyalty, and the American dream," the synopsis reads.
Cassian Elwes, Edward Zeng of NextG Films, Robert Daly Jr., and David Lipper of Latigo Films are backing the film with NextG Films financing. Cage, Gallo, and Vallelonga are also serving as producers.
Cage and Woo's Face/Off was a sci-fi action thriller that starred John Travolta as an FBI agent and Nicolas Cage as a terrorist, who undergo an experimental surgery to swap their faces and identities. The film was critically and commercially acclaimed, and was praised for the performances by Cage and Travolta and its stylised action sequences.
