Karnataka distributors vow to not take on Kaala

Following comments from the President of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, Sa Ra Govindu, that Kaala's release in Karnataka will be stopped because "Kannadigas are upset with Rajinikanth's comments with respect to Cauvery issue," speculation has been rife over the fate of the film in the state. At a meeting held earlier on Tuesday that was attended by over 25 distributors, it has now been decided that the film will not be getting a release in the state.

Umesh Banakar, Vice President of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, said, "Saurav Sharma of Goldie Films, which planned to take up the distribution of the film, has voluntarily come forward and announced that they will not do so. He is ready to sacrifice the earnings he would receive from the film's run. Being in Karnataka, he felt that it was imperative that he does not hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas and given the underlying reason is the Cauvery issue, he did not want the film to be screened anywhere in the state and asked the 25 distributors who had gathered there to follow suit."

Exhibitors, including members from various multiplexes who were present at this meeting, unanimously agreed that it was the way to go.

While Wunderbar films was not available for comment, SR Prabhu of the the Tamil Nadu Producers' Council said that given the paucity of information at hand, he would refrain from commenting for now.

It is to be noted that the last time such an issue arose in Karnataka was when exhibitors threatened to not entertain the release Baahubali 2 following Sathyaraj's statements about the Cauvery issue. It took an apology from director Rajamouli before the film could get released.
