During the press meet of Karuppan, Vijay Sethupathi said that his pride as a Tamilian would prevent him from accepting an award from the Central Government. He also added if he were ever forced to choose between his identity as a Tamilian and an award from the Central Government, he will always choose the former. "I am always for and with the Tamil people,” the actor said.
